Addictions Are Powerful

As a mental health care provider, we see addictions to narcotics, prescription drugs and alcohol every day. We also are now seeing a deluge of behavioral addictions like internet addiction, pornography addiction, sex addiction, technology addiction and others. Both the chemical and the behavioral can rob its “owner” of their health, relationships, job opportunities, and their happiness.

But there is one legal product that is perhaps the most impactful of them all – cigarettes. More people are addicted to cigarettes than any other drug. Even after years of anti-smoking campaigns, about 4 in 10 adults still smoke in the U.S. For 18-24 year olds, the number is higher. At our treatment facility The Center • A Place of HOPE in Edmonds, Washington, I see daily the impact nicotine addiction has on our clients’ appearance, their finances, their physical health and their mental health.
